Developers wanted!

Posted by: vero | Posted on: 04-01-2010 @ 11:51

We are starting an active testing phase in order to update our server to WoTLK.

Our GMs can manage testing, on the later steps we will involve players into testing too (follow announcements on the forums for not to miss this opportunity).
However testing is not everything, after we'll finish it and get a list of crucial bugs, they must be fixed before we can update our main realm.

And here we dont have enough manpower now. Fixing and preparing wotlk update might take too long. This is why we are looking for more developers.

If you have needed knowledge and willing to help us - we are looking forward to your applications. Show this announcement to your friends, anyone who can be interested.

This is a perfect time to stop crying on forums about wotlk and actually do something to make it happen.

Winter is here!

Posted by: vero | Posted on: 19-12-2009 @ 13:56

We finally noticed that winter has come and decided to refresh our site a bit.

As it was announced before - login to website was switched to e-mail/password combination. In order to login from now on you need to enter registration e-mail adress of your webaccount and your password, of course.

Exceeding ingame accounts clean-up was done. If you had more then 4 ingame accounts on your webaccount and now can see only one - dont panic and go read this announcement.
All you need to do - create 3 more ingame accounts and distribute your characters between them (not more then 10 characters per ingame account).

And finally, long awaited - new invitation system has come to life. Read more details about it HERE.

Changes, changes and did we mention changes?

Posted by: avy | Posted on: 23-07-2009 @ 01:08

There are several things going on with AlphaWow that we would like to share with you.

First of all, the founder of this private server, marcovtwout, decided to resign from his position in order to focus on other projects. We all thank him for creating this great place and wish him all the best in his future (His personal message can be read here).

As already being spread on the forums (here) Vero is joining Iota and myself as a part of the admin team. This step is logical since she has been involved in administrative actions for quite some time now and besides that she also promised not to ban too much. (She and Iota also promised not to paint the server pink, but keep an eye open just in case..)

We never really introduced everyone, so here is a small roundup through the staffpage.

Diehappy - Together with Vero the old schooler amongst the GMs, helping us with answering tickets since the dawn of time.
Mu - Helping to answer the over 9000!! tickets we get each day since beginning of this year (looks like we can't get rid of them).
Upsilon - Our recent new entrant, providing us with support for the non prime time timezones (Yes, we think of you... really!).
Eta - Fresh new GM on the fight vs neverending tickets.

Jovy - Our SQL developer, helping to kill all those nasty errors and providing all sorts of fixes.
Tau - Developer for ScriptDev2 C++ action - in case you wondered why those boss scripts suddenly work.

Kawaru - Keeping the forum a clean place (closed™ - enough said).

Talking about changes:

We're planning on changing our hosting location once again. This is going to be done for several reasons, most important of them being to cut down on monetary expenses (and ultimately required donations) and also to hopefully provide a better connection to the server again. Our new old host will be hetzner.de again. They have proven to be reliable, we never had any major reports about network problems and they also have a new dedicated server portfolio which absolutely suits our needs.

And the important part:

We would also like to apologize for the slow processing of donations lately and made several changes to the donation system. We will do our best to make it work as fast and responsive as possible from now on.

While on the subject of donations, we encourage you to consider making a donation to help us covering the setup fees for the new servers. We are working hard to keep this place up and running with all these changes lately, but we are no wizards and will need your help here. Donations have been coming in quite slowly and we do need more of them now in order to secure Alphawow's future. Please, keep in mind that all your donations are only used to cover the bills for running this place. AlphaWoW is not a profit-oriented project like other private servers might be. We would like to thank you in advance for helping us out keeping this place up.

A few questions that come across the forums once in a while. Yes, we are thinking ..

..about WotLK.
..about changing to Trinity.
..about opening the registrations.
..about the account splitting system.

but please, keep in mind that this project is running by lots of hours of staff's spare time, so things don't always go as fast as desired.

New Hosting Location

Posted by: avy | Posted on: 21-02-2009 @ 00:00

Once again we're expanding due to our growing need for hardware power.

Other than the last expansion there were multiple issues to cover this time.

Despite our quite regular database cleanups the constantly growing player database didn't really fit into the database servers memory anymore. In addition both cores of our world server were quite busy and could hardly manage peaks. The biggest issue was our traffic demand - the daily player peak of 1300-1400 increased our traffic to multiple terrabytes per month whereas only a part of that was covered by the hosting contract.

After a long journey of comparing hosting offerings we're now hopefully meassuring up to our requirements. In addition to almost doubling our hardware capacity (see Server Specs page) we're also now ahead of our traffic demands which allows us running the whole setup with different settings.

While other private servers try to grow past the 1500 players online border, which turns out to be some sort of mangos design limitation, we closed our invitation system and put our focus on stabilising our current setup in order to provide a lagfree experience.

In addition to our two main realm servers we ordered a third machine to provide a platform for the upcoming classic realm. All information about that in the corresponding forum section.

The testing has been successful, and we will continue working from our new hoster!
